Humiston School is an alternative high school for students in the Cheshire Public School system. It is specifically designed for students who face challenges in managing the size, pace, and demands of the larger Cheshire High School environment.

At Humiston School, students benefit from a small educational community that fosters active engagement in their programs. With a low teacher-to-student ratio, strong and positive relationships between teachers and students are formed. Typically, the number of students at Humiston ranges from 15 to 30 throughout the school year. This smaller population creates a close-knit community, reducing social stressors and allowing for improved focus on academic work.

The smaller setting at Humiston School provides a structured routine that helps students cope with the demands of high school. It offers tailored support to assist students in completing their education. Each student’s academic, interpersonal, and health needs are addressed, ensuring holistic support.

Students who complete their high school education at Humiston School receive a Cheshire High School diploma. The aim is for these students to graduate with their peers while being prepared for employment or post-secondary educational opportunities.

Enrollment at Humiston School has flexible criteria. Referrals must come from the Cheshire High School team, and both students with and without special education needs are welcome. Students in grades nine through twelve can enroll. Before beginning, parents and students participate in an intake meeting with Humiston School staff. Tours can be arranged for students being considered for enrollment. The Humiston team collaborates closely with the Cheshire High School team to ensure each student’s transition to Humiston is smooth and that their graduation requirements remain on track.
