Parent Advice

Annual Reminders

  • It is critical to be aware of the school calendar.  Pay attention to the dates each quarter ends for report cards and exam dates
  • Review Power School on a WEEKLY basis with your child.
  • Attend the annual school open house in the fall.
  • Read and discuss report cards with your child
  • Check your child’s class schedule.
  • Read and review the school rules and regulations as listed in the student handbook
  • If your student is in an advanced placement course, consult with his/her teacher regarding taking the AP exam and/or SAT II subject exam

Grade 9

  • Encourage your child to attend the freshmen orientation in August.
  • Discuss selection of tenth grade courses with your child.
  • Review the results of your child’s Career Interest Profiler results in Naviance

Grade 10

  • Review the results of your child’s Do What You Are results in Naviance.
  • Attend the Sophomore Career fair in the fall.
  • Discuss selection of eleventh grade courses with your child.

Grade 11

  • Visit colleges!!!
  • Attend the College Fairs in the fall at Cheshire High School.
  • Ask to see your child’s resume.
  • Encourage students to register for appropriate College Board Tests (SAT I, SAT II)and/or American College Testing (ACT)
  • Read and review the junior planning guide given out in February.
  • Discuss the twelfth grade course selections with your student, carefully noting graduation and college admissions requirements
  • Fill out the appropriate paperwork to schedule an appointment with your student’s counselor to discuss post high school planning.

Grade 12

  • Encourage your child to fill-out the senior questionnaire so they can schedule a meeting with their school counselor to prepare for life after high school.
  • Attend the College Fairs in the fall at Cheshire High School.
  • Attend Financial Aid Meeting.
  • Fill out the FAFSA.
  • Be sure your student checks college application procedures, deadlines, testing requirements and scholarship deadlines.
Have your child sign-up for an on-site admissions day at school with Central Connecticut State University, Western Connecticut State University and/or Southern Connecticut State University.
