Philosophy
Art is fundamental to the entire learning process. The creative capacity is inherent in every individual and can be cultivated through art education. The arts are among the highest of human achievements. They provide a vital avenue of communication for the developing student.

The arts develop feelings of self-worth and contribute to the personal growth of students who participate in creative work. Art programs encourage listening with understanding, dealing with abstractions, solving problems and making decisions. Art contributes to the growth and development of the whole child: mental, physical, social and spiritual.

***********

The visual arts at Doolittle School provide students with the opportunity to learn and to grow in a creative atmosphere, encouraging perception, understanding and judgment. Student intellect is developed through exposure to art production, art history and art appreciation. Process, product and evaluation are equally important to the art student’s experience.

Visual art skills and understanding are developed using the Discipline-Based Art Education Model. All students are introduced to a common core of artists and the artists’ styles/techniques. Students are then encouraged to use these styles in their own works. Later, students individualize and refine certain styles.

Students have the opportunity to participate in the following activities within the weekly general art classroom:

• Drawing
• Painting
• Constructing 3-dimentional crafts including weaving, ceramic, clay and paper mache
• Printing graphic designs
• Viewing/discussing art work

Each year Doolittle students participate in town-wide and state-wide art shows.
