Music Program at Doolittle School
| | Philosophy |

| | Music is an integral part of the human condition and is essential to the well-rounded education of all children. The ability to create, perform and respond to music emotionally and intellectually has an important humanizing influence. Musical knowledge and performance increase critical thinking skills, concentration, creativity, self-discipline, self-expression and self-esteem, which are vital to all learning. The skill, knowledge and habits acquired through the study of music literature enrich students' lives. Through these experiences, students build positive personal relationships with others, preparing them to live and work in a culturally diverse society.
Doolittle School offers General/Vocal music classes weekly to all students. These classes focus on music literacy development, vocal technique, repertoire building, motor skill development relating to musical performance, composition, improvisation, listening and analysis and creative movement. Students learn to perform vocally and instrumentally within a framework of historical and cultural understanding. The curriculum for grades 1-6 is part of a K-12 district-wide curriculum based on the National Standards for Music Education, the Connecticut State Music Education Standards and in line with district goals for curriculum and instruction. As part of that curriculum, grades 1-5 perform an annual recital, showcasing skills and repertoire learned during the year.
Available to all students are Intermediate Choir (grades 4, 5, 6), Select Choir (grades 5, 6 auditioned) and Primary Choir (grades 1, 2, 3 - beginning in the Spring.) Instrumental Music is offered to students in grades 5 and 6. Children can participate in band, string orchestra and jazz ensemble. The curriculum for instrumental and vocal performing groups is part of the Cheshire Public Schools District Music Curriculum and based on National and State standards. Performing groups each present a winter and spring concert annually. |
