Welcome to Darcey School
Stephen August Early Intervention Center

A Comprehensive Program to Meet the Needs of Cheshire’s Young Children
Darcey School provides comprehensive services for children ages 0-5 for the Cheshire Public Schools.
The state funded Birth- to- 3 program provides comprehensive year round services to children ages 0-3 who are identified as having developmental delays. The staff makes home visits to provide speech, physical, occupational or educational services. Additionally, children and their parents come together for playgroups at Darcey and at other town and recreational facilities along with other children ages 0-3 from the Cheshire community.
The Stephen August Early Intervention Center (EIC) provides special education services to children ages 3-5. Half-day and full day programs include special needs children and their typically developing peers. The specialists in the program work together as a team and integrate their skills in the areas of child development, speech/language pathology, occupational therapy, and physical therapy to address children’s needs. Darcey teachers also provide consultation to the community nursery schools. The Parent Center is a weekly program of the EIC designed to support Cheshire parents who have questions or concerns about their child’s development. Parents come to play with their children, meet other parents, and discuss their concerns with Darcey’s early childhood professionals. This may lead to a more formal evaluation to determine the need for specialized intervention.
Darcey provides the kindergarten experience for all of Cheshire’s children. The kindergarten curriculum includes literacy and numeracy components, science and social studies, as well as classes in music, art, physical education, and library skills. Assessment is ongoing insuring that instruction is geared to individual strengths and needs. Performance is documented through teacher observation, work samples compiled in portfolios, and ongoing curriculum assessments.
The kindergarten and EIC students participate in a school-wide Character Education initiative to ensure that children begin their schooling grounded in universally accepted principles of good character along with a strong academic program.
